Marine Life & Ocean

Life as we know it is changing, everything around us from the temperature of the waters to the expectation of marine life spans. As the ocean ecosystems deplete our environments become unsubstantial for rehabilitation, however, it is not impossible.
For example, harmful algal bloom (HAB) more commonly known as Red Tide is an immornous issue that continues to grow each and every day. But what is it exactly? Red Tide is the exponential increase of the microscopic algae concentration, specifically karenia brevis, also known as k. Brevis. Karenia produces powerful and potent neurotoxins such as brevetoxins. These neurotoxins not only kill marine life, such as whales, sea turtles, and fish, but it can also harm humans. Due to the variety of diets that marine life encounters, the consumption of brevetoxins is not uncommon. As the food chain evolves the transfer of brevetoxins can spread like wildfire.
As for location the Red Tide is primarily affecting the Gulf of Mexico as well as Florida's western water. However, HABS have been discovered in every U.S state as the increase of Red Tides have been a national concern. Yet, how does this conflict affect humans?
As mentioned earlier K. brevis can harm people. If one were to swim in a Red Tide they would experience: skin irritation, burning eyes, respiratory issues (if the water were to be digested), and one’s breathing may weaken depending on one's health. Yet, physical harm isn’t all that it can hurt, Red Tide also impacts the economy. For example, the finances to medical care from hospitals, the decrease of tourism revenues, the cost of beach clean ups, and the fish market. The Florida tourist industry alone has lost more than 184 million dollars as of 2021. As of July of 2021, the Florida Red Tide “has already killed more than 613 tons of marine life and fish in and around Tampa as of last week,” (Lauren M. Johnson, CNN).
Now you’re probably wondering how the Red Tide affects you and I. Well this planet is our home, and although one may not be able to scope the “small” environmental conflict first hand, it is still important to be knowledgeable to help everyone, including the environment. There are multiple ways to help sustain stability in any region. Suggestions include: volunteering for local clean ups, reduce, reuse, and recycle, educating oneself, shopping wisely, and using fewer outdoor chemicals.
